As Dave Itzkoff, from the New York Times reports, Cate Blanchett will play Blanche DuBois in Tennessee Williams “A Streetcar Named Desire”.

Healthy and Cheap Eats

I’m sure you’ve all tried, or at least heard of, Trader Joe’s.

I usually shop there on a weekly basis because their frozen foods are great for someone who travels a lot and even better, they are very affordable.

My top picks from the frozen foods section are:

Edamame

Chipotle Lime Chicken Burgers (low cal, good protein and you don’t have to touch disgusting raw chicken!)

Breaded Chicken Tenders (surprisingly healthy)

Shrimp Fried Rice

Marinated mahi mahi

The flowers at TJ’s are also really affordable and most of them last for a while if you change the water!

There is usually a long line but it moves fast and you really can’t beat the prices. The drawback of TJ’s is that you can’t always buy veggies a la carte, a lot of them come in bulk bags.

Run Run Run

On Sunday March 15, I will be running in the St. Patrick’s Day 8K race. If you don’t want to run in it, just come be a spectator! We can all celebrate with green beer afterwards…

About a year ago I was introduced to Zips Dry Cleaners. I highly recommend this place because it is cheap and quick! You have to pay cash when you drop your clothes off but all items are cleaned for $1.99. The trip up Connecticut Ave is totally worth it.

Arab Culture

Also at the Kennedy Center now is the Arabesque exhibit of Arab culture. Most of the exhibits are free and all are fascinating. Walk down the entrance halls and see bridal fashions from Arab countries. Then, walk upstairs to see authentic jewelry and calligraphy. Not only are there displays of the jewelry and calligraphy but there are also videos showing how they are crafted and it is truly fascinating to see such talent.

Not to be missed is the Visual Arts Installation: Lara Baladi: Roba Vecchia.

Did you know that there is a free concert at the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage every night?

Last Friday I had the pleasure of seeing K’Naan perform. He is a hip hop artist from Somalia who writes thought (and dance) provoking music. If you haven’t heard of him I highly recommend checking him out on iTunes.Com

I have yet to see any other concerts at the Millennium Stage but I definitely plan to. You can’t beat a FREE concert! Oh, and they offer a free shuttle to the Kennedy Center at the Foggy Bottom metro stop every 15 minutes!

Happy Hour Hot Spot

My new favorite happy hour spot is Vapiano’s in Dupont. It has all of the components I look for in a place to meet up with friends and unwind after work.

Cheap drinks? Check. (As little as $3.25 for rail drinks and wine!)

Outdoor seating? Check. (Even with heaters for this cold weather)

Cool crowd? Check. (Young professionals – not too hipster, not too stuffy)

Food? Check. (I didn’t eat but it looked good.)

Easy access? Check. (Right at the Ferragut North metro stop and close to the N4 bus stop)

We’re all suffering from this dismal economy in some way, aren’t we? Although many of us can’t keep up with our usual shopping and grooming addictions, there are some places that cater those on a budget.
